Nose/Brain Science - How Aromatherapy Affects The Mood and Emotions

Have you noticed that a scent can bring a memory to life? You smell brown bread baking and it's as though you were sitting in your grandmother's kitchen; the perfume your cranky second grade teacher wore immediately makes you feel anxious.

This is because the nerves controlling the sense of smell are closely linked to the Limbic area of the brain which controls mood, memory, and stress response.

Unlike other senses, smell bypasses the logical brain, which is why aromatherapy can create immediate emotional shifts and is so incredibly effective for stress and anxiety.

Anti-Anxiety Aromatherapy Recipe

This blend combines four powerful essential oils known for their calming and uplifting effects:

Ingredients:

  • Grapefruit (Citrus paradisi) – Uplifting and refreshing, helps reduce mental fatigue and boost mood.
  • Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) – Well-known for its calming properties, balances the mood, aids relaxation and improves sleep.
  • Benzoin (Styrax benzoin) – Warm and comforting, soothes emotional distress and eases nervous tension.
  • Ylang Ylang (Cananga odorata) – Works in a very physical way to soothe emotions. It regulates adrenaline levels, controls the breathing rate and regulates the heart rate.

Contraindications:

  • Grapefruit – Dont use it on skin that will be exposed to bright sunlight or a sunbed within 48 hours, it's phototoxic and can cause burns
  • Lavender – Don't use it for pregnant women
  • Benzoin – No known contraindications.
  • Ylang Ylang – Can cause headaches unless it's used with other essential oils.

7 Ways to Use the Blend for Stress & Anxiety

  • Aromatherapy Inhaler

An inhaler is a convenient, portable way to experience aromatherapy anytime.

  • Recipe: Add 5 drops each of Grapefruit, Lavender, Benzoin and Ylang Ylang essential oil to a blank inhaler wick.
  • Storage: Inhalers last about 3 months if kept away from heat and light.
  • How to Use: Waft the inhaler under your nose and take slow, deep breaths for a few minutes. Use as needed.
  • Where to Buy: Aromatherapy inhalers can be purchased online or from holistic stores. Choose from:
    • Plastic inhalers (affordable, but less eco-friendly)

How This Blend Helped a Student with Severe Anxiety

I hadn't seen one of my students, Anna, for several weeks, and I was shocked at her appearance. She looked tired, tense and pale. She was struggling with severe anxiety and she had started seeing a psychiatrist.

She asked me if there was anything I could suggest, so I made her an aromatherapy inhaler using Grapefruit, Lavender, Benzoin and Ylang Ylang essential oil. She began using it several times a day.

A few weeks later, I saw her again, and she looked like a different person—calm, glowing, and at ease. Without thinking, I blurted out the silliest thing ever:

“Oh my God, you look like YOU!”

She laughed and said, “That’s exactly how I feel!”

The only thing she had changed? Using the inhaler daily.

Her psychiatrist, amazed at her progress, reduced her medication instead of increasing it. When she learned about the inhaler, she told Anna to keep using it.
